An Exchange Between Mother and Son:

Mom turns on the TV in an effort to distract Soren so she can take a shower and not have a repeat performance of yesterday when he threw her clothes into the shower. Twice. Then she sneaks into the bathroom and turns on the water, crossing her fingers that he won't hear it and come running. No such luck. Soren comes running into the bathroom.

Soren: Bath!
Mom: No bath. I'm going to take a shower.
Soren: BATH!!!! (Tries to open the cupboard under the sink to get out his bath toys.)
Mom: No, I'm going to take a shower and you're going to watch Caillou.
Soren: Okay! (Runs out of the bathroom and goes to watch Caillou)
Mom: Wait, that really worked? Seriously?

Suddenly he can be reasoned with. He has learned to delay gratification. And it is a wonderful thing.

this was the most exciting thing i've read all day!! they have this very famous study that shows that pre school children who understand the concept of delayed gratification were almost always better off in life! it can predict healthy behavior throughout their entire lives!

if only i could manage to learn this concept...
